Testing children with behavior/cognitive/learning challenges
Advice for supervising adults testing children who may find concentration difficult.
Children with behavior/cognitive/learning challenges may find it harder to concentrate throughout the Triple Factor Hearing Screener. The following strategies can help.
- Keep the environment as quiet and distraction-free as possible. Test early in the day, ensuring the child is well rested, has been to the bathroom and is not hungry.
- Consider whether the child is having a good day as anxiety may impact the results.
- Break the instructions down into simple steps and check the child understands each step before starting.
- Complete the three Trial Run Activities to ensure they can confidently undertake each one without assistance.
- Explain that the sounds will get quieter and quieter and there will be times when they can’t hear anything and this is normal. Encourage them not to touch the screen until they hear the next sound.
