Tips for testing children who are EAL learners

How to support learners of English as an Additional Language through the Triple Factor Hearing Screener.

The Triple Factor Hearing Screener is available in English and Mandarin. Children for whom English is an additional language may need extra support to understand the instructions.

  • Review the words and phrases with the children prior to undertaking the test.
  • When picking the words for the first activity (Speech-in-Quiet), ask the child to say each word out loud to ensure they know what the word is and how it sounds.
  • Complete the Trial Run with the headphones out.

If a child’s language skills do not enable them to complete the Triple Factor Hearing Screener, including identifying 5 words for the first activity, you may wish to test with the Automatic Audiometer (provided you have the appropriate equipment).
